Last Sunday, my family decided to visit the new science museum downtown. My sister was so excited that she packed her favorite lab coat and safety goggles before breakfast. We took the subway at 9 o’clock and arrived just in time for the opening ceremony. The building looked like a giant robot made of glass and metal, which made me think of the robots we learned about in technology class.
The first floor was full of interactive exhibits. I remember seeing a machine that could turn colors by touching them. When my sister pressed her hand against the green area, the screen showed a picture of a frog. Then she touched the red section, and it changed into a ladybug. We spent twenty minutes playing with that machine before moving on. Next to it, there was a section about space exploration. I tried on a spacesuit made of foam and imagined floating in zero gravity. My sister took a video of me pretending to repair a broken satellite.
We went up to the third floor at noon. The lunch area had tables made of clear plastic where we ate sandwiches and fruit. After eating, we watched a 30-minute documentary about ancient inventions. I learned that the first clock wasn’t made of metal but was actually a water-powered device called an hourglass. The movie made me realize how important creativity is in solving problems.
The most interesting part was the robotics lab in the back. We met Mr. Wilson, the museum guide, who was wearing a robot-shaped hat. He showed us how to program a small robot using tablets. My sister named hers “Sparkle” and taught it to follow her by drawing arrows on the screen. When the robot successfully moved to the blue button, we both jumped and clapped. Later, we tried to make the robot carry a ball, but it kept dropping it. Mr. Wilson laughed and said, “Machines learn by making mistakes, just like we do.”
We left the museum at 3 o’clock, but not before visiting the gift shop. I bought a model of the Colossus of Rhodes, and my sister got a robot sticker set. As we walked back to the subway, the sun was setting, and the robot-shaped building looked even more beautiful in the golden light. This experience taught me that learning can be fun and that even small robots need patience to learn new skills.
